Top Google Searches – ooh something shiny = me

So…Google changed their search algorithms so that users get better results and less nonsensical, spammy stuff.

I was worried because it just delights me that this blog is the first thing that comes up if under the “ooh something shiny” search. The first page is just me and a bunch of Harry Potter — even better.

See more on this topic here: Lifehacker (Lifehacker is a site you should visit regularly or RSS feed if you don’t already.

BUT…I’m still number one. Feel free to google ooh something shiny if you want to check.

~Meh~

James Cameron’s 3D Epic about a group of cave explorers winding their way through underwater caves. It was two hours of people winding their way through underwater caves. And none of the characters were developed enough for you to care if they lived or they died. (Other than watching the opening scene and thinking, yep. That one’s a goner. That one too.) There wasn’t even any real eye candy either, unless you count Josh, the sulky man/child.

The high point for me was when I screamed during the 3D previews when a snowball “hit” me.

Believe me, your heart will go on.

Books Books Books

I’m not as far behind in reading as you would guess by my lack of postage. I have completed books 3, 4 and 5, but I have not yet gotten around to reviewing them yet. I have completed Decoded by Jay-Z, Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. I am currently on scarf number four, so 2 out of 3 prongs of my 3 point 50/50/50 challenge are going along swimmingly. As for the third, I am currently researching cultures where chubby women are revered.

I Have an Irrational Fear of Armored Trucks

I get so nervous when they show up near a store where I am shopping. I’m always afraid that they are going to be robbed and I’m going to be caught in the crossfire if there is gunplay between the robbers and the truck drivers.

I walk quickly (for me) and take a really wide berth around the area where the truck is parked.

I can’t be the only one who is this neurotic about this.

Sooo…I don’t usually do restaurant Reviews…

but this evening’s experience at Carrabba’s (egad! A chain! ) certainly warranted it. We only went because we had a couple of gift cards (thanks Tim). We had not actually heard of the place before, but I am glad we ventured out. We got to the Amherst location (near Niagara Falls Boulevard) close to seven on a Thursday and it was ~packed~. Upon finding that we had not called ahead, the hostess let us know that we could choose to sit at one of the long shared tables in the bar or near the kitchen instead of waiting if we chose. We selected the bar table and our server Kathleen attended us immediately.

Learning that this was her first visit, she gave us the Carrabba’s lowdown, letting us know that all meals here were prepared fresh and that there was no microwave in the kitchen. She guided us through the extensive menu, took our drink orders (Sangria for the Mr, Cabernet for me) and soon returned with fresh warm bread with herbed oil for dipping, followed by salad then our shared crab cake appetizer with red pepper sauce. Delicious, but not appetite spoiling. Service was attentive, but not intrusive. Kathleen seemed like a genuinely cheerful, helpful person and made our evening even more relaxing. We chatted, while keeping an eye on Sabres action on the bar’s two flat screens, listening to our tablemate’s conversations, a birthday party to our right and a group to our left discussing gingerbread houses.

I ordered a fillet after getting Kathleen’s assurance that I would not be getting the fatty, sinewy cut that usually prevents me from ordering steak at chain restaurants. It came with garlic smashed potatoes and a refreshingly generous portion of broccoli. Restaurants are notoriously stingy with their fresh vegetables. It arrived delicious and perfectly cooked despite my attempts at pacing myself through the courses, I could not come even close to finishing my entree, My better half ordered the shrimp and scallop dish and while he was finishing his last few bites, they brought him an additional plate because they thought his scallops were overcooked. He didn’t finish his meal either. Kathleen brought our check and boxed up our leftovers and we finished our drinks without being rushed, altogether a pleasant and relaxing evening that I would highly recommend.

Scarf #3

I really like this one. The colors remind me of spring which is odd for a scarf. I knitted this one almost entirely on a trip cross state to take our youngest back to school (I wasn’t driving). Its kind of amazing that you can get into a car with a skein of yard and a some knitting needles and get out a few hours later with a finished garment.

These are super simple scarves though. Knit on both sides, chunky yarn. The needles are size 14 I think and I usually cast on 12 or 14 stitches and keep going until the scarf is about 6 ft long.

My husband and I were joking about what a lousy engineer I would make because my measurement technique on the last one was to have him hold the scarf up to see if it was as tall as he was. To measure this last one while I was in the car, I folded the scarf across a magazine I surmised to be 12 inches high until I had a stack of six layers.

Book Two – The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games. This book really blew me away. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did, I initially read it only because a friend lent it to me via Nook. I thought it was so cool that I could sit here in Buffalo reading a book sent to me by a friend in Utah. But I digress.  (Which would probably be the perfect tattoo for me if I was so inclined. Or maybe “Surely, you can’t be serious.” in French.) Sûrement, vous ne pouvez pas être sérieux.

The Hunger Games is a post-apocalyptic, dystopian, young adult novel. It is one of a trilogy about Katniss Everdeen, a teenager who keeps her family and much of her coal mining town from the brink of starvation by hunting illegally in the surrounding woods. She is fiercely loyal to her family and her close friend Gale and it is in protecting them that she is plucked from obscurity and plunged into The Hunger Games, an annual reality show gone awry. The games were created to emphasize the futility of rebelling against the totalitarian government which keeps it’s citizens firmly under it’s thumb.

Kat’s struggle between her fierce independence and her need to “go along to get along” to keep her family safe and survive the games is the core of the novel. I gasped aloud at parts of the book and cried at others. I strongly recommend this book and I am powering through the next in the trilogy.

Soooo….about that whole losing 50 pounds dealio….

So, the third prong of my 50-50-50 plan has been conspicuously absent thus far. This one is a little trickier to quantify without angst. I will may post a weight loss chart for progress reports and pictures every now and then. I have a dramatically unflattering pic I am considering posting. We shall see. This bloggy accountability should keep me on track. I will get at least one gym trip in this weekend and I’m using the weight watchers points Plus program for food intake. More on that in a later post.

UPDATE: Here is a little weight tracker that I will share.

Book One of 2010 – Chasing the Bear

Chasing the Bear– Short book, novella really from Robert B Parker. There is no mystery to be solved, its a conversation between Boston PI Spenser and his Harvard educated psychologist girlfriend about his childhood. It details what made young Spenser the Spenser that he is today. Fun read for Spenser fans (I am one) but it won’t make much sense as a freestanding novel to anyone unfamiliar with the series. I found out recently that it’s supposed to be a young adult novel. I really can’t see it.
