50/50/50 Challenge

I’m a little reluctant to put this out there since it is pretty ambitious. My birthday is on the ninth. I will be 49 which means that I will be entering my 50th year. My goal this year is to complete my own 50/50/50 Challenge. I want to knit 50 scarves, read 50 books and lose 50 pounds. All while  learning to play the cello and writing a full-length play.

Oh and I work full time and have a house and family to take care of. Here’s a picture of scarf number one. I’ll check in once a week or so. I figure that worst thing that can happen is that I only get to 20 or 30 of each, still nothing to sneeze at.

Something will have to go though, so I think trash television and mindless surfing will have to be a thing of the past.

Black Friday Campout? I Don’t Think So.

I consider shopping to be the worst of all possible chores.  But this time of year, it’s fun to delight your loved ones with carefully selected gifts. I am able to avoid the big box stores and the malls for the most part by visiting local vendors and shopping online. Here are some of my favorites:

Elmwood Village – This part of Buffalo is full of funky little independent shops and lots of places to stop for a cup of coffee, glass of wine or a bite to eat.

Village of Williamsville – Plenty of little shops and restaurants here as well, on a smaller scale than Elmwood. The Locavore movement is so big in dining that Locashop seems the next logical step.

If you really want to support independent artisans, visit etsy.com. Hundreds, maybe thousands of hand-crafted items. It’s like a gigantic online upscale craft fair.

Zappos – I can’t say enough good things about this site. Great customer service, free shipping and returns. I’ve had my shipping upgraded a couple of times and there is a wide range of product offerings.

Barnes & Noble – This is a brick and mortar store, but the website is great as well. Books, music, games and of course, The Nook.

Thinkgeek – Lots of fun items like T-shirts and gadgets for the geek in your life.

If you are looking for a huge selection of Ts and hoodies, check out NoiseBot or Cafe Press.

Shop at Archie McPhee for the craziest collection of stocking stuffers you’re ever going to find. Ninja Bandages anyone?

For everything else there is Amazon and Target. I’ve had great luck with both and there is something for everyone.

A couple of my favorite items to give and get are iTunes and Starbucks gift cards. You can order these online if you like, but I am able to pick up a wide variety of gift cards at my local Wegmans. This is a great option even at the very last minute.

Product Review: Philosophy Peppermint Bark Lip Shine

This is a great gloss– sheer and non-sticky in a festive shade of red. It’s red not RED so it can be worn to work or on errands without looking too done and it tastes delicious. I picked it up at Sephora on last weekend’s mall outing.

K found some cute things at Garage, a trendy and inexpensive store that is new to Buffalo. It’s based in Montreal and has some really fun items like this embellished tank and this cross-body bag.

We also got just a tiny bit of early Christmas shopping in. I won’t be likely to be anywhere near a mall until well after the holidays so it was fun to spend some time there.

There’s an App for That – Jesusy Edition

Olive Tree Bible Reader

http://www.olivetree.com/resources/free/

This is actually a Bible Reader for the iPhone. It also comes in Droid and Blackberry editions. It contains both the ASV and King James versions and it’s easily searchable. I whipped it out at a recent Bible Study session and found the verse we were discussing lickety split. Free.

Daily Ignatian Reflections

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/daily-ignatian-reflections/id395830983?mt=8

If you are as big a fan of the Jesuits as I am, you will love this app. Every day you get a new reflection and prayer. Nice little anytime prayer break. Free

Busted Halo Mobile

http://www.bustedhalo.com/features/busted-halo-mobile

This isn’t an app, but it is a very good mobile stripped-down version of a very robust Catholic site. Busted Hero is geared mostly toward twenty-somethings, but I am double that age and learn plenty. As with any site, don’t read the comments or you will despair for the future of our civilization. Free.

What Not To Wear

I’m convinced that if a woman came on there who was so large that she was unable to wear anything but a bedsheet since the Reagan administration, Stacey would stand behind her, place her hands in the vicinity of her ribcage and say, “Look how narrow you are through here.”

Millionaire Matchmaker – Most Distasteful Millionaires Ever

I’ve been sick most of this week, so this is likely too boring for words. I have mostly been sleeping and working. I did stay up for Millionaire Matchmaker. They had the most unpleasant millionaire guests this week. There was a priggish troll of a gay man and a Brooklyn drunk who was incapable of functioning without his boys (see previous reference to gay man). He made the Jersey Shore gang look like paragons of decorum.

Watch here.

I’ll take Potpourri for $500, Alex

You don’t realize how often you bow your head at church until you have a head cold that makes it feel like there is sand shifting around in there.

Love this new (to me) blog I found: http://youarenotsosmart.com/

Had a blast at a big annual Halloween Party. The Cat in the Hat fell asleep at the bar. (at least he finally stopped singing ‘you’re too sexy for your tights’ to to The Incredibles). The Teletubbies were playing darts. Yogi Bear and Boo Boo were singing karaoke. We dressed as Jane Grey and Cyclops.

Toostie Pops are surprisingly popular this year.

I watched Shaun of the Dead twice this weekend.

Great Rundown of all the signs at the Rally for Sanity.

So when your husband asks how long the kettle has been boiling…

He probably doesn’t want to hear, “Umm…Truman Administration?”

Just demonstrating that I am living the “something shiny” lifestyle. I don’t close the spout because the whistling annoys me, but then I burn the kettle out.

On the cello front, I’m currently working on Ode to Joy and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Watching Project Runway. Gretchen’s stuff is so hideous. I just don’t get it.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Tweets

The wife of Liu Xiaobo, this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner was placed under house arrest and her phone access was cut. She was able to issue twitter updates, but apparently that is gone now as well.  He was instrumental in the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protest, actually preventing student deaths by convincing protesters to disburse. He has been detained repeatedly in the last twenty years for subversive activities against the Chinese government.

I keep hearing the Chilean Miner Rescue compared to the moon landing, but I keep thinking about Baby Jessica.

Oh Kayne, Why Must You Be Such An Ed Hardy?

I’ve always enjoyed your music, but now when I hear you on my iPod now, all I can think of is the VMA puppy-kicking episode.

I discovered that I can flat-iron the Florence Henderson out of my current haircut, so I may be able to live with it until it grows out.

Getting ready for 4:30 mass at St Greg’s. If you are in WNY and have never been, you should go. There is a teen choir (The Glory Beats) which sings upbeat and inspiring music. It’s a very welcoming parish and breaking news: a freshly ordained priest has been added to the roster. If you go to the parish bulletin online, you may see the very carpet-angel-making Dorothy I posted about last week (assuming that this week’s bulletin is up).

Dinner this evening was crockpot Rosemary and Red Wine Beef Stew from my friend Gayle’s blog. Very tasty and different without being weird.
