This Really Happened: A Thanksgiving Story

So, for a variety of reasons, this year we are postponing our big thanksgiving meal until Friday. I still wanted to make a nice dinner today for the two of us, so I decided on the classic steak and baked potato.

Last night around 7, I went to Wegmans to buy my Thanksgiving groceries and while unpacking, I realized that I had forgotten to buy steaks and also rolls, which I needed both for monkey bread this morning and Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. So shoes back on and off to Wegmans again.

This morning I got up and opened the fridge and couldn’t find the rolls. Then it hit me. Duh. I had left the steaks and rolls sitting on the kitchen table.

I threw away $15 worth of food- gah.

Back to Wegmans this morning. Good thing they are open for a couple of hours.

Just a little absurdity to kick off the holiday season.

Speaking of kickoff, I am NOT a football fan, so I’ve decided to hold my own West Wing Marathon today.

Honey, Reddit Blew Up My Blog

I don’t usually bother checking my blog stats on my WordPress App on days when I haven’t even posted a new entry, but my email was blowing up with new subscribers, links and comments, so I checked it out:

What the What?

Yes, those are real stats. This little stream of consciousness blog, which averages maybe 50-100 visits per day, got more than 29,000 hits in less than 24 hours. And it’s not even porn!

This all came about because someone posted a “Today I Learned” at Reddit referring to my post from August 2011 entitled:

F Scott Fitzgerald Made Ernest Hemingway Look at His Naughty Bits

Now, this had already been my most popular post of all time, and oddly enough the one most frequently searched for, but prior to today, that post’s total views in more than a year was less than 2000. But adding my blog to reddit as a TIL jumped my views right up to an all-time high.

At any rate, this is very silly and fun and I owe Atlas52 a debt of gratitude for totally making my day.

TLC and the End of Civilization

Here are eight of the things I’ve learned since back in the day of Trading Spaces when your neighbors could turn your outdated living room into a stage set with a can of paint, some drapes and a handful of items from the Props Department.

1. What Not to Wear- A mom bob and $5k worth of blazers and pointy shoes can completely change your life.

2. Say Yes to the Dress – $5k is enough to buy you a wedding dress. From way in the back of the stockroom. By the dumpster. Maybe. As long as you don’t want lace. Or beading. Or a veil. Or alterations. Or shoes.

3. Four Weddings – Spending upwards of fifty thousand on your wedding does not guarantee that it won’t be a tacky mess.

4. Moving Up- If you are perfectly happy with changes the new homeowners made to your former home, Doug Wilson will poke until he finds something that ticks you off.

5. Toddlers and Tiaras- If you spend four hours spray-tanning your three year old and squeezing her into a scaled down version of a Vegas cocktail dress, you will not have time to run a comb through your hair and change into a clean sweatshirt.

6. Here Comes Honey Boo Boo- The Mayans were right.

7. Long Island Medium- There are dead people. Their loved ones want to know that they are at peace. If you use enough hair and nail chemicals, a Saturnlike ring will form around you, forming a conduit to the netherworld.

8. Abby & Brittany- Maybe I don’t know as much about Quality of Life as I think I do.

Awolnation, Imagine Dragons, Zeale Heat Up Water Street Music Hall

This was my first venture out to Water Street Music Hall in Rochester. They have had some great acts in the past so I’ll have to keep an eye out now that I know how easy it is to get to. Seriously. I live in the eastern Buffalo burbs and it was an hour door to door. 90 to 490,  and the St Paul exit dumps you at the door.
.
I had been planning to see Imagine Dragons when I learned they were coming to Rochester. I was listening to Awolnation on my iPod and decided to look up their tour schedule and bam, there they were paired with Imagine Dragons.
.
So clearly I was going to be there for sure.
.
The line to pick up will call tickets, was half a block long. I won’t do will call again, but amusingly the tour bus out front, which one of my line mates surmised was Awolnation, had someone inside playing Zelda for Wii.

By the time I got in, the venue was packed. Unlike the Town Ballroom in Buffalo, it’s all one level, not tiered, so it’s a lot harder to plan a strategy to make your way to the front, but I did eventually. I always do. I’m too short to see in a general admission show otherwise.

Soon Zeale took the stage, an Austin, Texas based hip hop group/indie that had the crowd pumped up in no time.  They were clearly excited to be on the tour and are currently working on a collaboration EP with Awolnation.

Imagine Dragons took the stage next nine-ish. The crowd was pretty nuts. I think that they were the main attraction to a substantial portion of the audience. The lead singer, Dan Reynolds still seemed amazed at the reception he got from the audience. It was a real sing-along crowd, with people joining in on most of the popular songs.
I was really glad that I got to see them in a relatively small venue because now that their album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, they will likely be booking arenas next pass through. They will likely gain additional attention now that It’s Time was covered on Glee and is featured in the film version of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, opening this weekend.
Personally, the lyric “…I’m never changing who I am” is bound to resonate with a person of a certain age who still goes to general admission concerts on a regular basis.

Awolnation, a truly genre-defying band, was the headliner. Sail from the Megolithic Symphony CD is probably their most well-known track because it appeared on The Good Wife, Longmire, So You Think You Can Dance and  during the London Olympics. My favorite song is Knights of Shame a nearly fifteen minute song that covers genres from rap to electronica to dubstep to pop. Aaron Bruno, the lead singer, has sited inspiration from such diverse artists as Little Richard, Prince and The Dead Kennedys.

I was afraid that such a heavily electronic sound would disappoint live, but that was not the case. Bruno never stopped moving, engaged with the audience and actually walked out onto the crowd.

If this trio of bands comes to a venue anywhere near you, they are definitely worth the drive.

A Very Shiny Review of The Words

Really enjoyable movie. The structure of the movie was unexpected, a sort of story within a story within a story. (yes, I know Inception already did that) I won’t be spoiling anything by telling you that it’s the story of a struggling young writer who finds a manuscript and passes it off as his own. Bradley Cooper plays the writer Rory Jansen, talented in his own right, but he is a victim of market forces that deem his work unpublishable.

His father is initially supportive and has bankrolled him for some time, but he is at the end of his checkbook and is ready for writer to man up and get a real job and confine his writing to the off hours,

Zoe Saldana plays his beautiful supportive wife, Dora. Thats it. No depth. No background. No mention of her job, her hobbies, her family, just her supportive wife. Don’t get me wrong, if I was a guy in the market for a beautiful supportive wife, Zoe Saldana would definitely make the cut, but I’m not, so I would like my female characters fleshed out just a bit, thankyouverymuch.

The manner in which writer finds the manuscript will bring a nod of recognition to Hemingway fans, as Hemingway’s first wife Hadley, made a similar error, which dealt a serious blow to their relationship.

Dennis Quaid plays the narrator, Clay Hammond and Olivia Wilde his literary groupie, Daniella. They had an astonishing lack of chemistry which I hope was by design since the difference between their ages is so vast that the only thing he should be giving her is a pocketful of butterscotch candy.

Daniella draws Clay out, asking the questions that we want to ask, but that he has refused to ask himself.

Jeremy Irons plays the old man, the author of the manuscript and you will have to see the movie yourself to find out what repercussions, if any Rory faces for his no longer faceless deception.

I Have Been Interested in Politics Since I Was Eight Years Old

Believe it or not, I was having long, sometimes heated conversations with my parents about things like the Vietnam War before I even made it into double digits.

I keep up on issues, I read, I listen, I watch and I always always vote. I write to my representatives.

It’s been a rocky road some of the years since I turned 18 and cast my first vote. I have been disappointed when my guy didn’t win, and I have sometimes been disappointed by my guy after he has won. (I’m REALLY disappointed that it’s still been all GUYS to date.)

But I kept fighting the good fight.

This past ten years or so it’s been hard not to get jaded. Events I believe were mishandled, a frightening rise in corporate power, increasingly invasive encroachment on civil rights made me think it was time to opt out.

There are tons of apolitical people living full and happy lives.

I was torn between my sense of civic responsibility and managing my own angst.

After watching the past couple of nights of speeches at the DNC, I am reinvigorated. Former President Bill Clinton, Michelle Obama, Kal Penn, Elizabeth Warren, Dival Patrick
Joe Biden and I missed so many others, reminded me how truly blessed we are as Americans and how very much we owe to our forefathers, our brothers and sisters.

It reminded me of what I have known since I was a child, that my voice matters, I matter and I have a responsibility to make my voice heard, otherwise a government of the people, by the people and for the people doesn’t work. The United States Government isn’t them, the government is US.

I also had an awful lot of fun live-tweeting unfolding events as i watched. It made me feel like just a tiny part of history.

And I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to vote. Here is a link where you can register: Register to Vote if you are in New York State as I am. You should be able to google for other states. If you have trouble, contact me via comments and I will help.

Also, if you will be out of town on election day and you are a New Yorker, go here. Again, if you have trouble contact me and I will help ifI can.

I think it’s crucial that people vote and I would rather help people I disagree with to cast their vote than to see even one vote suppressed. The ongoing voter suppression efforts currently being organized countrywide are a disturbing abuse of money and power and one of the most Unamerican events of my lifetime.

So vote, participate, pay your taxes, perform your jury duty and try, just try to appreciate how fortunate we are and do it without complaint.

As always feel free to comment. I do moderate before comments are posted, so feel free to disagree, but do not be mean or profane or inflammatory or it won’t get posted.

And just in case you have not downloaded the Constitution App to your smartphone, the US Constitution states that the GOVERNMENT cannot “abridge your freedom of speech”* but I sure as hell can on my site, so keep it clean.

*please take note of this if you don’t know already, the constitutional provision for freedom of speech applies ONLY to the government. You are free to boycott the face off of a business whose policies you disagree with, or advertisers supporting a media pundit given to vitriolic hyperbole.

That’s called voting with your pocketbook and it has zero to do with free speech.

Why I’m Slowly Moving Away From Facebook

I’m slowing moving away from Facebook for a variety of reasons. Top of the list is that I’m not crazy about what a corporate juggernaut it is becoming.

Going public never really improves the quality or customer service of a product.

Facebook has got it’s place. It’s a great place to keep in touch with far flung relatives and friends. It’s also a perfect venue for my artist, theatre and musician friends to invite me to their shows and exhibits.

After more than five years, I’m pretty firmly entrenched, but there are other media that function better.

I love Twitter. I know they have made some TOS changes lately that have yet to shake out, but I just love it for news and live-tweeting major events. I have also enjoyed some really fun conversations on Twitter. I have become quite a heavy user.

I tried to avoid Instagram, but resistance was futile. I use it almost entirely for dog pictures. They are awesome dog pics though.

I’m now more interactive on Linked In. I’ve had a robust profile on there for some time, but now I focus on sharing news stories that reinforce my personal brand. I do need to contribute more to conversations in groups.

I’m also active to varying degrees with google plus (g+), Pinterest, tumblr, reddit, stumbleupon. Also, I use google reader for managing my rss feeds. I still have a MySpace account as well which I hope that Justin Timberlake will revitalize.

It seems that Facebook had become a sort of catch all, but there are better stand alone applications for virtually every component.

It will be interesting to see how these various media rise and fall and what new offerings are yet to come.
